March – Star of the month

Hamamelis Intermedia Jelena

Witch hazels are deciduous shrubs or small trees that give us colour and scent in late winter. Their unusual-looking, spidery flowers in shades of yellow, orange, and red bring a welcome splash of colour at a time when not much else might be going on in the garden. The flowers appear on bare branches and are followed by light green, oval-shaped leaves that give good autumn colour, turning bright yellow or orange before falling. It’s a fantastic specimen plant, that looks great underplanted with spring bulbs. To see the flowers glowing in the early morning sunlight on a cold winter day is a real treat!

Growing requirements: well-drained, neutral to acidic soil in sun or light shade.
